In a quiet day of trade, stocks were driven higher by beauty products maker Avon and luxury clothing and accessories company Michael Kors, whose results impressed investors.

The Dow has surged at the start of the year, logging its best January in almost two decades, after lawmakers reached a last minute deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff" of sweeping tax increases and spending cuts. Investors are also becoming more optimistic that the housing market is recovering and that hiring is picking up.

The 30 member Dow has now closed above 14,000 twice this month. Before February, the index had closed above that level just nine times in its history. The first time was in July 2007; the rest were in October of that year.

Avon's stock price jumped $3.51, or 20 percent, to $20.79 after the company posted a fourth quarter loss that wasn't as bad as analysts expected. The company also hopes to save $400 million by slashing costs. Michael Kors rose $5, or 9 percent, to $62 after reporting earnings that beat analysts' predictions.

About 70 percent of companies in the S 500 have reported earnings for the fourth quarter. Analysts are projecting that earnings will rise 6.4 percent for the period, an improvement from the 2.4 percent growth reported in the third quarter, according to S Capital IQ.

The notion that inventory should be counted as a current asset alongside cash and equivalents is a dubious one.

To give investors an idea of how much time the company has before it is in danger of a liquidity crisis, recall that the company's working capital fell by over $800 million from Q4 2012 to Q1 2013, and then by another $1 billion in the most recent quarter without the loans. This means that unless lenders are willing to support the company, or unless there is some sort of magical turnaround in the company's business, it will only be liquid for 5 or 6 months at best (and this assumes that sales and profits do not deteriorate further).

Management refuses to acknowledge what is so apparent to myself as well as several bond and preferred stock holders viz., the company is in serious financial trouble. CFO Ken Hannah opens his part of the conference call by saying:

Our results reflect the progress we are making on our journey to fix the problems we face and stabilize the business.

Whether Hannah is trying to keep up appearances or whether he is unable to draw conclusions from basic data, the company is in serious financial trouble, and management refuses to acknowledge it. Penney has made little to no progress in refiguring its image, its brand, and its conceptualization of its customer base since my previous article. Penney brand and experience. To quote him from the conference call:

As I argued in May, this is simply the wrong approach.

Although we're thinking about getting gifted around the Kitten Lounge Loft (Happy Christmas Eve to everyone and those celebrating other winter holidays, enjoy them without a doubt), I have to say that my mind around this time of year goes to the beginning fashion tradeshows that kick off my fashion calendar as well as such events as Sundance Film Festival. Although I want to be warm, I know that it is essential that I'm still cute as I will be heading to the airport for warmer climates, running around the city and more and you can't skimp on the cute factor. Last night, Paul and I wandered the Village after a round table and made our way to a super yummie Thai restaurant! NY Fashion Week F/W 2011: Wearable Wednesdays Rachel Roy

By far, when I think Rachel Roy for fall, I think about her amazing outerwear. I'm obsessed with shearling, fur and all of the fun elements that add a little pop to your winter wear and once again, she didn't disappoint. I love that both looks represented here are perfect for brunch, going out to dinner or wherever the day takes you. They beg to be layered, paired with booties and amazing fingerless, long sleeve, cashmere gloves. I would definitely love to rock both of these looks at this very moment!

NY Fashion Week F/W 2011: Swoonfest Saturdays Rebecca Minkoff

So far the show that has given me goosebumps and swoonfests from start to finish would be Rebecca Minkoff! You know that I am a fan of her accessories (I've been working from my iPad this Fashion Week and of course it is protected by her Python Black case with gold beading and I love my matching coin purse) and when she added apparel and shoes, I was definitely all over her boho chic sensibilities as well! Yesterday I tweeted throughout the show talking about all the looks that I loved with shades of grey, green, black, cream and of course fur and amazing outerwear. Now I have to say that the ones above are my favorite look. What do I love most about this time of year? Last week after coming back from an amazing night of drinks, I looked up at one of my favorite sites the Swarovski Crystal ornament that hangs on 5th Ave by Trump Towers.
